Chains of Office

Chains of Office Link to this post

Hello, could you please advise me on the following: If the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are invited to the same event and both accept, are they both able to wear the chains of office?
Thank you

Re: Chains of Office Link to this post

Hello,
Sorry to sound grumpy here, but my first question to you would be "why is the Mayor AND Deputy attending the same event? I would argue that he whole point of a Deputy is to 'deputise' if the Mayor isn't able to attend - which clearly he/she is. It's a bit like playing a sub at football but not taking a player off in return. This is, of course, a matter for your Town Council to decide but the Deputy gets their turn next year and there is an element of 'chain gang' about this. If the Deputy wants to attend I would argue it should be in a Councillor, rather than Civic, capacity.

Good morning

I would agree with Paul. If the Mayor has been invited, and is attending, the Deputy Mayor would attend in his Elected Member capacity and not as Deputy Mayor.

Our Mayor and Deputy both get invited to the AGM of the local hospice as they become President and Vice President respectively. We send them in chains.

Re: Chains of Office Link to this post

Further to the points made previously our Chairman has an event where she likes the Vice-Chairman to attend and greet guests with her and help look after the other 'Chains', and says on that occasion she gives the VC special permission to also wear the Chain. Although it is not correct protocol, it does make it easier for guests to identify the VC. Should I still insist that the VC does not wear the Chain of office?

Sounds like you have an occasion where it might be sensible to have both Chair and Vice Chair present, though it would be better if they were greeting community leaders and key volunteers, rather than a bunch of other chains! Me on my high horse again!
