Mayor's Fund
13 October 2021 at 9:23am
Morning, we have had a Mayor's Charity bank account for a long time and have been having issues changing the signatories on the account. This has been ongoing for some time before I took over the role just over a year ago. Our Mayor's Fund is not registered as a charity as we raise less than £5000 per year. We have asked our legal team for support and they have advised that we must register as a charity. Could anyone give me some clear guidance on this as I am out of my depth on this one (not that it is going to resolve the fact that we have money sitting in a bank account that we cannot access). Thank you in advance, Theresa

Hello - a little bit of digging tells me that a charity must be independent from government body or local authority.

Our Civic Office is not registered as a charity and we too have a separate bank account which avoids funds that are raised being swallowed up by corporate budgets. Be interesting to see what other views are held

Hi Tracy, thanks for responding so quickly. Our Mayor's bank account is set up the same as yours. Our legal people are trying to make things complicated I think but I am pushing back. I will let you know what the outcome is.

Morning, we too have a separate bank account which I manage but signatories are the accountants who audit each year.

We too use a separate bank account but I'm led to believe that we should be applying to the Charity Commission to become registered. Its on my long list to resolve!
