Remembrance Sunday - Wreath Laying

Remembrance Sunday - Wreath Laying Link to this post

Hi, I am planning our Remembrance Sunday parade & service and am interested in how the wreath laying aspect of your services is carried out. The DLL always lays the first wreath followed by the Mayor and other civic dignitaries but recently we have had lots of community groups and other organisations wishing to be called forward. This sometimes means that the wreath laying can last longer than the actual service and I have had people faint at this point over the years. At a recent planning meeting it was suggested that once the main people have laid wreaths we would just call forward all political groups, then charities, then community groups etc. Does this happen in your authority? We don't have an active RBL branch in Middlesbrough and the onus is on the council to organise the parade, any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Jules.

In Exeter we let our VIPs go first (approx 20), once they are done the Lord Mayor invites the associations/organisations etc to lay a wreath whilst she inspects the parade whilst this is being done, the choir and band sing an appropriate piece of music. They tend to go up 4 at a time and kinda sort themselves out.
