Confirmation of process/protocol for when Mayor/Deputy Mayor attends another LA area
3 August 2021 at 1:14pm
Hello,
My name is Craig and I recently became the Mayor and Deputy Mayor's PA at Telford and Wrekin Council, to which is a role I am very much enjoying, however am conscious to always adhere to Civic Protocols and would greatly appreciate any help and advice on what the protocol is for a Mayor/Deputy Mayor who is invited to an event or engagement outside of their Local Authority area?
I assume I would need to contact the Mayoral Office for the Local Authority out of courtesy to advise, however I assume to also enquire and gain the permission of the Mayor of the Local Authority area to allow the Mayor/Deputy Mayor of another Local Authority area to attend wearing their Mayoral chains?
Does this process also apply to the Mayor of the Borough attending any town's within the same Local Authority area where there would be Town Mayor's?
Many thanks
Craig

Hi Craig
The first principle is to ensure that there is good reason for your mayor to be out of area in an official capacity - what is in it for the people of Telford & Wrekin? Assuming that test is passed then yes-it is important to let the civic head of the area being visited that your Mayor will be there and why, seeking permission to wear the chain of office. This will be done through that area's civic office.
It is discourteous not to do this - imagine how you would feel if your Mayor questioned you why he/she had just seen the Mayor of (say) Woverhampton in your area and you knew nothing about it.
Whilst the relationship between your Mayor and any Town Mayors you may have within your borough is different, I would still encourage close working and co-operation with your civic office colleagues in those small towns.
I hope that helps.

Hi Craig,
Just to add to Phil's response, I work for a Berkshire authority and have good relationships with the other Civic Offices in Berkshire. I would not automatically assume that chain permission is granted as I have a good relationship with them but out of courtesy would always advise that my Mayor is visiting their town for whatever reason and to ask for Chain permission.
It is always useful to build relationships with nearby authorities so that you can support each other.
